You're not alone

You're far from alone in feeling nervous

We see patients every week who've put off the dentist for years - sometimes decades - because of nerves, past experiences, or a general sense that the chair just isn't a place they can relax.

We get it. And we've built Aspire Smiles around it.

From the moment you walk through our doors, you'll find an environment that feels intentionally different - calming diffusers, soft lighting, no harsh smells, no clinical white-on-white. We've designed every part of your visit to feel less like a medical appointment and more like a quiet, looked-after experience.

How we help

How we help nervous patients in Warwick

We offer IV sedation, allowing patients who are very anxious to attend for certain necessary dental treatments. We dedicate certain days for this every month, devoting ourselves to creating the most relaxing and comfortable treatment process possible. We can control the flow of patients in the waiting room with you and offer a dedicated room for you to relax in before and after your treatment.

Beyond sedation, here's how else we support our nervous patients:

  • A patient concierge - You'll have a dedicated team member looking after you, not just a clinical team
  • Longer appointments - We never rush you out of the chair
  • Clear communication - We explain everything before we do it, with no surprises
  • A pre-agreed signal - You can stop us at any point during treatment, no questions asked
  • A quiet room to settle in - For nervous patients, we'll never just send you straight into a busy waiting area
IV Sedation

What is IV sedation

You remain conscious and able to speak but in a state of relaxation, less aware of what is going on around you.

IV sedation begins working quickly, so there is no need for prolonged waiting times. You will feel comfortable during treatment, with very little awareness of what is happening and will not be able to remember much, if anything, about the process. You are likely to feel drowsy for several hours after treatment, so please bring someone with you to receive your post-treatment advice and take you home.

If you feel you would benefit from IV sedation, please talk to one of our friendly team.

How does IV sedation work?

Your sedation appointment is carefully planned to make sure you feel safe and looked after every step of the way. Here's what to expect:

01

Pre-sedation consultation

We'll talk through your medical history, your concerns, and what treatment you need. This is also where we'll plan exactly how the day will go

02

The day itself

You'll be welcomed into our practice and shown to our quiet relaxation area, where you can settle in away from the main waiting room

03

Sedation administered

A small cannula is placed in your hand or arm, and the sedative is gently delivered. You'll feel relaxed and calm within minutes

04

Treatment carried out

Our team will carry out your treatment while you remain comfortable. You'll be conscious and able to respond, but most patients remember very little of the procedure afterwards

05

Recovery

You'll be looked after in our recovery space until the sedation wears off enough for you to leave with your chosen escort

06

Post-treatment care

Your escort will be given clear written aftercare advice, and we'll always check in the next day to see how you're feeling

Who it's for

Is IV sedation right for me?

IV sedation isn't for everyone, and it isn't always necessary. We'll only ever recommend it if we think it's genuinely the right fit for you. That said, it's an excellent option for patients who:

  • Have severe dental anxiety or phobia
  • Have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
  • Need longer or more complex procedures, such as dental implants or oral surgery
  • Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
  • Find injections particularly difficult to tolerate
  • Want to combine multiple treatments into a single, comfortable visit
Treatments with sedation

Which treatments can be carried out under sedation?

IV sedation can be combined with most of the treatments we offer, particularly longer or more involved procedures. We commonly use sedation for:

If you'd like to combine sedation with treatment that isn't listed here, just ask. We'll always do our best to plan your care around your comfort.

On the day

What to bring on the day of your sedation appointment

A little bit of preparation makes the day go smoothly. Here's what you'll need:

We'll send you full written instructions before your appointment, so there's no need to memorise anything. If you're unsure about anything, just give us a call.

A trusted escort

A responsible adult to receive your post-treatment advice and take you home

Loose, comfortable clothing

Especially something easy to roll up the sleeve on

An empty stomach

Don't eat for at least 4 hours before your appointment, and only sip clear fluids in the hour beforehand

No alcohol or recreational substances

For at least 24 hours before your appointment

A clear day

Plan to do nothing but rest for the rest of the day after treatment

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Will I be unconscious during IV sedation?

No. IV sedation is sometimes called "twilight sedation" because you remain conscious and able to respond throughout treatment. You'll be deeply relaxed, your awareness of what's happening will be reduced, and most patients remember very little afterwards. It's quite different to a general anaesthetic, where you'd be fully unconscious.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes. IV sedation is a well-established and routinely used technique in dentistry. Your medical history will be carefully reviewed beforehand, your vital signs are continuously monitored throughout the procedure, and you'll be looked after by trained, qualified team members from start to finish. We'll always talk you through any specific considerations during your consultation.

Can I drive home after IV sedation?

No. The sedative remains in your system for several hours after treatment, so you'll need to bring a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. Please don't plan to drive, operate machinery, or sign any important documents for at least 24 hours afterwards.

How long will I feel drowsy for?

Most patients feel groggy for the rest of the day, with full recovery typically by the next morning. We always recommend taking the rest of the day off work and avoiding any strenuous activity. By the following day, you'll usually feel completely back to normal.

What's the difference between IV sedation and a general anaesthetic?

Under general anaesthetic, you're fully unconscious and your breathing is supported by an anaesthetist. IV sedation is much lighter - you remain conscious, breathe normally, and can respond to your dentist - but you feel deeply relaxed and remember very little. For most nervous patients, IV sedation is more than enough to make treatment comfortable, without the additional risks and recovery time of a general anaesthetic.

Can I have a routine check-up under sedation?

We don't usually recommend IV sedation for shorter, simpler appointments like check-ups - it would be using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. For very anxious patients, we'd start with a gentle introduction to the practice, plenty of conversation, and our calm environment, before considering sedation only if it's truly needed for treatment.

Do I need to be a registered patient at Aspire Smiles to have IV sedation?

Not at all. We welcome new patients for sedation appointments, and many of the patients who travel to us from Leamington Spa, Heathcote, Bishop's Tachbrook and the wider Warwickshire area do so specifically because of the gentle, considered care we offer.

What if I just need help feeling calm, not sedation?

That's absolutely fine. Many of our patients simply benefit from longer appointments, clear communication, and our calm environment. We'll never push sedation if it isn't needed - we'd rather help you build trust gradually and find the level of support that genuinely suits you.
